    Hi,

I’m looking to brush up my php skills (or lack of them!  😊 ) and was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for a good php book?

    Cheers

I would recommend one of the Zend PHP Certification study guide books.  They are full of information and definitely make sure you know your stuff.

I’d recommend all of the PHP book published by Sitepoint.  I’d start with the Kevin Yanks book—its excellent and great for beginners looking to get there php feet wet.

Thanks for these. The Zend Certification looks good (I think tests can be a good way to learn). Also like the look of the PHP Anthology book by sitepoint.

The Apress books are pretty good.  Just do a search for PHP on their website.  I like that they have E-books which are half price of the hard copies.

I suggest giving CodeIgniter for a spin.  The framework makes creating applications so easy that you can create something useful with even very little knowledge of PHP.  Your PHP skills will get better as you go.

Thanks John, I’ll take a look at the Apress Books. I also thought CodeIgniter might be a good place to start, learning is alot more fun when you’re constructing something decent rather than following “hello world” style examples 😊

If you’re more of a “front-end” person then I’d recommend PHP Solutions to start with. It starts with very practical real-world examples to explain the basics of php. Supplement this with a more reference style book (like an O’Reilly PHP book) and you’re all set 😊.
Both books are also available as a PDF download!
