Do I need a commercial license? If so, got a couple other questions.

I have been using a Core license as its feature-set is all I need for my site, for several months on my personal site. I now intend to add a section selling items (physical) that are unrelated to the site. Do I need to purchase a commercial license, or can I use the Core one? If I need a commercial license, do I *have* to upgrade the actual software to the commercial version to install the license (or does it not matter as there’s no external way for it to be looked up anyway)?

Finally, say I do decide to upgrade the software to the commercial one if I decide to want to use the Simple Commerce Module at some point. How hard is the migration, do I lose data, and where can I find the guide on how to do this? I remember reading the migration was lossless and smooth, but I can’t find where for the life of me. Any help that can be given is appreciated!

EDIT: I should note that the “primary purpose” of the entire site is not to make money, but the purpose of that section of course would be. That seems to put me in a gray area as far as the knowledge-base article goes. Part of its purpose is to support the hosting.

Hm- a gray area indeed.  Selling a t-shirt or two wouldn’t push you into commercial status.  And if you’re getting rid of some old books and stick an ad up on the blog, I wouldn’t say that’s commercial either.

I suggest emailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)directly- give them some details on what’s going to be sold and how it works, and they should be able to guide you on an indvidual case basis.

If you do upgrade the license- there’s no requirement that you actually upgrade the site to the commercial version.  That said?  I definitely would.  There are some nice extra modules you get with pro/personal.  And the upgrade is very easy- pretty much like a version upgrade.  As long as you back things up, you should be fine.  Check the docs to see how easy it is.

    Make sense?
