I think that the answer is yes - but will EE allow for certain members to have a blog automatically created for them?

No, there isn’t an automatic way of doing this but you might want to elaborate a little on exactly what you want/need to do.

One of the requirements for the site we are going to be building is that certain members (ie a specific group of, say powerusers) will have their own blogs within the site.

So when a new member is signed up they will a new blog needs to be created for them and a link to that blog appear on a list on the front page.

There isn’t an automatic way to have each have their own blog. You’d need manually set up a memberGroup for each with all the permissions etc. and assign the powerUser to that group. If on the other hand you want them to be part of blogging group you can assign them to that and set everything so they can only add/edit/see their own posts within that weblog/memberGroup which could simulate having their own blog. I haven’t done this but it would involve the proper settings/permissions/etc. in both the members area as well as the templates.

In general, EE is not a blogging platform like Blogger, etc. and in fact doesn’t allow EE to be used as a “hosted” blogging platform.

    Does that help?

so if I want multiple blogs within the site, I would need to set them up manually in the CP?

You can have as many blogs as you want but yes, in general, they each have to be set up manually in the CP.

Ditto what PXLated said.  And I personally would just go with one blog- have them all post to that- and then pass their username in the url to make a ‘fake’ individual blog.  Unless there’s a compelling reason they each need their own setup or something.

But as noted- EE isn’t meant to be a hosted blogging solution, and it would be against the license to use it as such.  If that sounds like what you’re using it for, you can check with sales to clarify.

to be honest, I tend to agree with you - one blog, multiple users. My problem is that the client has been reading things.

They also want me to use Drupal, because they have ‘researched’ different solutions and have declared that Drupal has a good development community attached to it. Personally the thought of getting to grips with something like Drupal fills me with horror - I’d rather go back to building bespoke CMSs.

I’ll try and talk the client round on the whole blog issue.

    Robin Sowell,

Can you provide a solution to make such “fake” blog (Just a few words)?

I imagine what they are suggesting is simply filtering blog posts by user using the parameters in the entries tag. See:

    http://expressionengine.com/docs/modules/weblog/parameters.html#par_username

In this way you can have a list of users who have posted to the main blog and just pass the username into the blog page from the link, then just display all posts by that user.
