I have a site that is starting to be spammed like crazy with nonsensical stuff such as:

    rzpjxddc
    rzpjxddc
    http://erynbqew.com
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
    uflojmbt, tbexlsri

I’m running akismet and I had captchas going for a while but they are still coming through.

I saw a site one time that emailed you if you wanted to submit a comment. You had to click a link in the email for verification and then your comment was posted automatically.

Would this be a possibility with EE?

Email verification for every comment or comment verification to allow commenting by that user.  The latter will probably not work for long as it is fairly obvious that spammers have people who simply stay at a computer doing email verification and cracking CAPTCHAs.  The former seems possible.  It would require probably a module/extension combination.  The module to have the Action possible and the Extension to send the email for verification after a comment has been posted.  Sounds kind of like self comment moderation, which seems a bit smarter to have a person on your side do rather than the poster.

I’ve always liked the sites where the comment doesn’t post until the email is verified…think Engadget is this way. It may not foil the dedicated human spammer but it does require a verifiable email address. The trouble with admin moderating is it kills any kind of comment flow (conversation) if you get tied up and can’t clear the comments for a period of time.

Yes, it does.  So does a verified member account, if you allow member-only commenting, and having members in a community does have a certain benefit.  And writing a program to download emails and hit links is a relative piece of cake, one could just tweak our Moblog module to do it, honestly.

But like all spamming “solutions”, they are not actually solutions, just further barriers.

    So true.
