    Hello!

I’m about to build a huge website for a company. They need both an intranet site (hosted in-house on their server) and a public website.

The thing is that the intranet and the public site needs to communicate with each other. For example, an updateable list of employees will be presented on both sites, but it would be wonderful if the admin user only had to update the list in one place. Also, the news posted onto the public website should be presented on the intranet site too.

Can EE’s multiple site manager do this? I have it that sites handled within the multiple site manager can share data between each other? Remember that in this case the sites are on two different servers.

I really love EE’s flexibility and wonderful support (blink blink) so please let me know as soon as possible! 😊

Hi, Johan. MSM wouldn’t work in this case. However, you could use an RSS feed using Magpie to display news items. You can also do iframes as needed.

Have the admin update on the external facing site.

    Does that help?

RSS is definitely a good option in this scenario.  Another option, should you need more than just the ability to display the data, would be to have both installations running MSM (one for intranet, one for the public site) and have the database of the local intranet installation cloned to the public server on a daily basis. This is a little more costly, since you’ll need two EE+MSM licenses, but gives you the added benefit of being able to preview the public site before it is pushed live each night. There are also technical implications with having to clone the database on a regular basis, and of course having the local intranet site’s data on the public server and vice versa.

In a meeting with the customer today we agreed that RSS is the way to go, for now. Thanks for your quick replies!
