Are EE’s knowledge base and documentation running on EE? If so, are these or similar templates available? We require exactly the same functionality and would hate to have to reinvent the wheel.

    Thanks.

The knowledge base is, though the templates are custom styled and not available for download.  (That said, the basic idea is pretty straightforward and I’ve setup similar ones.  I believe Magento’s K-Base is also EE powered and has a similar look.  I’m not suggesting rip off the css- but it’s easy to code the functionality and give it the look you like.

As to the documentation- I’m not entirely sure how they set that up.  The standard docs are html- I can download them and see it.  But- the user contributed comments bit?  Pure EE.  Interesting.  I’ll see if one of the crew can chime in on that one.

    Hi Circus,

The templates for the Knowledge Base are not available. Its all pure EE but the implementation is tailored made for ExpressionEngine.com. By this I mean that the way we implemented EE’s default features to create our Knowledge Base is tied specifically to our custom field setup, weblogs, templates, RSS feeds, etc… It would be quite impossible to share them and have them work on another site without a lot of tinkering.

With EE, particularly for something advanced like that, you’ll want to build your own so it works exactly the way you want. Just because the public facing ExpressionEngine.com KB looks like what you want doesn’t mean our setup is what you want.

The docs are static HTML files. Our dev team whipped up some php trickery that enables comments via EE but this is very much a custom php based solution that is not an out of the box feature.

I realize this is a stale thread, but I’m looking to create something like a kbase that would benefit from the general layout of your Knowledge Base.

I understand that the look is custom work and that the inner workings rely on custom fields and other set-up, but is the basic functionality something that can be done with various EE tags?  I’m thinking specifically of the Frequently Asked Questions page in the Knowledge Base, with the categories displayed as “folders” with # of entries, and the “Common Questions” and “Recently Added” on the same page.  I’d like to provide that kind of browseable hierarchy of categories->subcategories->entries if possible.

Is that possible?  (I’ll worry about the “how” later.)

    Thanks!

Hi, Tom, welcome to the forums!

Yes, this is all available through use of the weblog module and your templates. =)
