Anybody join in on the Ubuntu craze this week with Thursday’s release of 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)?

    I did.

Needless to say, I’ve put 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) back on my system as of this evening.  Nothing awful to say about 7.10, but it just doesn’t seem quite finished.

What about you all?  Any Ubuntu fans out there?

I’m running Gutsy right now.  I have not been able to use the nvidia (proprietary) video driver, but everything else seems to be OK.  It does seem to be something display related, because even with the nv driver, the nosplash boot-up does not seem to work with vga=791 ... the screen goes black for a while until X appears.

I also suspected that it might be related to my installing the release candidate and then updating.  Did you start with the release candidate or the actual release?

Also, what was it that was a show-stopper for you?

I installed clean using the actual release (always do) and my nvidia driver installed fine through the Restricted Drivers Manager.  However, on my wife’s laptop (with an ATI card) the screen stays black until X loads—no splash, though you can view the console by CTRL-ALT-F1.

The things that bugged me were small - the basic image viewer wouldn’t load images, Firestarter kept disappearing and I’d constantly have to restart it, initially the install of PHP, Apache, MySQL, etc wouldn’t let me access my local server via localhost (had to use 127.0.1.1 for a while, then localhost somehow would work…).  As I said, small things, but Feisty, Edgy and Dapper never gave me these types of “problems”.  I like Linux because of the freedom it gives and the learning that’s involved, but I really don’t want to spend a ton of time troubleshooting the issues when I know I can use a different version that is just as good 😊

Eh, things are back to good now that I put Feisty back on (20 minute total time for complete OS reinstall - that still amazes me) and got things set back up.  Compiz-Fusion is back in effect, my apps are running and I’m back to happy!

Well, you could wait until Gutsy gets some bug fixes, or stay with Feisty until Hardy comes out.  Since it will be a Long Term Support version they will be focusing on a more stable release.  Gutsy has some nice features though.  For example it recognized a new printer and set it up perfectly.  And after they iron out the bugs, a mis-configured xorg.conf will result in a conservative GUI, not an abrupt abort to the command line.  I can handle the command line fine, but I recognize that many new to Linux seem to need GUI for everything.

Heh, I might have screwed myself.  I installed 7.10 on my VPS today not even realizing it is so new.

I have upgraded my Ubuntu to 7.10 and only had two small problems. DNS problems are back for me where I have to set my dns server in admin -> network for synaptic to work. I had problems with compiz but once I had synaptic working I could install the settings manager which allowed me to fix it. I don’t use it on a daily basis preferring my Gentoo install but it certainly seems ok.

I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 on a Fujitsu Simens of a friend of mine and had only small issues. Something with an odd soundcard an my/the typical wireless problems.

I have to say that the installation was quite smooth compare to what linux installing was in the past. And it looks quite nice!

    I would recommend it!

Ubuntu 7.10 is great. It comes with compiz installed by default (probably to defeat vista and leopard in desktop beauty). All things work smoothly, but as always, i can’t do suspend/hibernate on my laptop :blank:

I am a great fan of Ubuntu linux distro, so i will recommend it to everybody

I’m running 7.10 on my laptop. I think the Compiz Fusion addition is really neat (had been testing it on 7.04). The more I use it the more new stuff I find that helps me get closer to migrating off of Windows on my desktop also.
