Suggestions to replace Dreamweaver MX2004 site manager?

If anyone out there is familiar with the site manager in DWMX, this is the only part of the program I use much (preferring BBEdit on my new iMac). I do not want to upgrade DW but I have been having some problems, as when I upload updates and DW crashes when files are over 300KB. (It might also have something to do with my slow dial-up connection).

I could use a regular FTP program with mirror capabilities, but I really like the GUI and the control I get in the files view of DW, which shows the ‘sites’ you set up.

Any suggestions for a stand-alone Mac FTP program which works similarly?

    Thanks,

If you prefer BBEdit you can set it as the default editor using Transmit and actually edit files directly online.

I have used BBEdit for this and it works very well. I generally edit my local copy when I need to, which I don’t very often. What I am looking for is something to upload directories of files, and with BBEdit you cannot delete directories or upload directories as far as I can tell.

    Thanks,

    mgk,

Unfortunately, I don’t have a solution to offer, but my thought is this is the reason Panic introduced Coda to the Mac world as “one-window web development.”  I could be wrong, but there really wasn’t an alternative until Coda.

Another vote for Transmit. I have used it since becoming a macaddict several months ago and love it even more than the DW GUI.

I would highly recommend giving Coda a look. IMO it’s hands down better than Dreamweaver in functionality, work flow, and has a really slick interface.

The combo Transmit/BBEdit or Transmit/Textmate is indeed hard to beat 😊

Sounds like you want one product. Like you had with dreamweaver. Coda is great for that. Edit files and upload them when you make a change it is perfect for what you want.

I hate to start a debate, but I just don’t see what people like about BBEdit anymore.  It was great in it’s heyday, but due to their reluctance to take it from a Carbon app to a CoaCoa app sealed it for me.  Coda or the TextMate/Transmit/CSSEdit route is such a better experience than BBEdit.

Think I will try Transmit. I like BBEdit because I am used to it and it works well. I just use it for HTML/CSS. I like handling code, don’t have much use for WYSIWYG, and I am not really much of a techie.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I’d have to agree with the others that Transmit is great. I use the combination of Transmit and Textmate although Coda keeps tempting me. Coda is a great all-in-one solution. It’s a matter of what best fits your workflow.

(Sidenote: If Coda could combine the power of Textmate, the collaboration abilities of Subethaedit, and of course, Transmit, you’d probably only see one app being recommended here. I guy can dream can’t he?)

    Ignite,

You forgot CSSEdit’s folders… easily, the biggest time saver of them all:)

You’re right about CSSEdit, I forgot to mention that. Thanks for point that out. By “folders”, do you mean “groups”? Groups are represented by a folder icon.

Yes Ignite, Groups/Folders, whatever… it beats searching through a list of uncommented or commented selectors.

Ah, ok. Just wanted to be clear. Thought I was missing out on something. 😉
