can anybody tell me why these 2 links don’t work? Is it something to do with EE Core? Also, whilst the smileys box shows, I can’t insert smileys into posts. Nothing happens. Thanks

Hi Wizzbang.  We’ll need more info then that.  I see you’re on the hosted demo, so I know you’re running a recent version and build of EE (always helpful to know when trouble shooting).  What is the URL of your site so that we can see it in action.

For smileys, are they enabled under CP Home ›  Admin ›  System Preferences ›  Emoticon Preferences?

no, I’m actually trying both versions, your hosted version so I can see how it should work, and EE Core on my servers so I can try to get my teeth into it, and that’s where I’m having the problems. My URL is http://dwhitworth.demonweb.co.uk/index.php  Thanks in advance

as for the smileys, I’ve checked what you say, and all is correct. The smileys box appears with all present, but when I click on one it doesn’t get added to the comment

Ah, I see.  Sounds like a pretty good strategy, but unfortunately, we can’t support core in the “tech support” forums, but if you wanted to get this working on your hosted demo, it should be largely the same as running on core.  If you want to proceed, just let me know the URL I can see this at - it’ll be a huge help for diagnosing what’s wrong.

If you want to proceed with the core, my recommendation would be to start a thread in the community support forums.

well, basically, I want to buy the commercial setup, but if I can’t get this working I won’t. I may be new to EE, and whilst I’m not a vastly experienced webdesigner, I’m not a novice either, and I don’t understand the glitches I’m having. Whether I’m on your hosted version or Core, surely the end result (getting me onboard as a commercial user) is the main thing here, right?

Absolutely, and of course the end goal is for you to join us.  The problem is that the code between core and non-core, while very similar, has differences.  So we work with non-core for formal support, to remove one further variable.  It should be largely the same though, which is why I suggested we could getting working for the hosted demo for you if you wanted.

That said, can you tell me a bit more about the errors you’re getting for the about and contact page?  Are you getting error messages, or blank pages, or something else.

well, if you go to the URL http://dwhitworth.demonweb.co.uk/index.php and click on the mentioned links, you’ll see that nothing happens, the page remains exactly the same. Also, if you go to the comments and try to post a reply with a smiley, you’ll see that it doesn’t paste, the smileys box appears, but nothing happens when you click on them, and I did verify what you said in your first reply.

OK, for contact and about, the links are just pointing to “#” and so aren’t going anywhere.  If you have a template named “about” in your “site” template group, then that link would be

    <a href="http://{path=">About</a>

What version and build of EE is this?  You can find that info in your control panel.

it’s the latest 1.6.0 No, there’s no “About” template in my site group. I suppose that explains the problem, but I thought that all the files uploaded to my server were included for the basic layout. Obviously not…

OK, so that sets you on your way for contact and about.  As for the smiley, that looks like a bug that had been fixed, but the fix may not have made its way into core yet.  Could you test this out on the hosted demo and let me know if the smiley problem still exists.

thanks for your help. Much appreciated. I just don’t understand, though, why some of the elements are up and running immediately from upload, and others are left out. To newbies like me it makes you think immediately that you’ve done something wrong. I’ll check out the smileys on the hosted version and let you know. I don’t actually, want to use smileys, I just wanted to see that everything could work in theory, so was left scratching my head when they didn’t

You bet.  I’m going to have someone from the crew look into the core download as well.

    Welcome to EE!
