Just wondered what peoples thoughts were on using wordpress. I’ve used CI to create one or 2 sites and a fairly complex insurance app, and was wondering if anyone would be able to see any benefits in using wordpress as a platform for simple sites? I personally love CI but I wondered if a CMS such as wordpress had its place somewhere..

EDIT - oops maybe this is more related to this post.

WordPress is fine if you want a blog, but not really a good solution if you want something more.  You could hack it and extend it, but that would take time and could be pretty unmanageable in the long term.

Wordpress is 100-degrees of pure awesome. It’s great for blogs and great for simple CMS systems (it takes a bit of work to adapt to the post/page system, but nothing difficult).

Well I’ve done the 5 minute install and played about changing themes etc, and it looks like a super tool. Its got a busy community and looks suitable for what I want.

Basically we have an XML feed of info articles and a 12 month archive in a db too. We want to set up a mini ‘info’ site to show these articles and link the keywords etc to our site. I reckon WP is going to be a winner for this.

There is also the possibility that we will migrate the existing popular site over to WP bit by bit, in order to make the site easier to maintain and keep the content fresh, but its all got to be done with SEO in mind…

Aw, I think you’re being a bit hard on it 😊

If you dont need too much custom work and not too much performance then wordpress is fine. Our company was forced to work with this thing on a few big projects because its CMS side is very nice for redactional work.

Well I don’t want to start a flame war here but if you want to run a popular site ... possibly with users that may login and so on wordpress will start to crawl slower and slower as the member and post database fills up. Mostly because of the underlying database structure and how wordpress internals work with it.

And one tip for the programmers here: If you dont have to look at the wordpress core code PLEASE DONT

Hey.  Are you a CodeIgniter using Wordpress? 😉

I agree, Wordpress is great software, with a large community and a strong following.  But since EE and CI share much code (and more every version) if you’re a CodeIgniter person, you might be more comfortable with ExpressionEngine (its free for personal use), and additionally, those skills translate into CI.

    Also this: WordPress. ExpressionEngine.

I have thought, and thought, and thought about giving EE a try. Right now I am working on a personal project that EE would be absolutely perfect for - alas, the licensing fees are a bit more than I can afford at the moment.

I didn’t know EE was free for personal use though - I may give it a download and toy around with it some. I usually bounce around the EE site like a retard doing the tango. For some reason I always end up on the licensing page, or the modules page, realizing I can’t afford to accomplish what I really want to.

    (its free for personal use),

Isn’t that the CORE version? and if so what limitations are there?

I’d be more than happy to evaluate this and personally feel happier with CI, its just that people here seem sold on WP…

Yes its core.  The differences are that core doesn’t include some of the modules, but in general for personal blogs its pretty complete.

I think people are “sold” on WP the same way people are “sold” on Internet Explorer.  Its the most popular option out there, and there are some very knowledgeable people who can bend WP to their will and choose to use it - but most of the people using it defaulted to that choice because they didn’t know what else was really out there, and didn’t understand what their needs really were.

Anyhow, WP is a fine piece of software (as is IE on the whole), but I’d just suggest that people educate themselves before locking in.
