    Hi,

I have an online magazine and forum, and we display banner ads. We have a few dozen sponsors and their ads appear as vertical banners in the right column of every page—in the magazine and in the forum.

We have used third-party software in the past to serve these ads up: shuffling them, keeping track of which have appeared in relation to others, tracking click-throughs, etc.

So, is there a module that allows EE to do this, or can you recommend software that is compatible with EE?

    Thanks,

    Mike

If you’re not familiar with it, OpenAds just creates zones. It gives you code to place on your page that identifies the zone. Then, from OpenAds, you designate which ads go into which zones. The zone code then calls whatever ads need to go in that zone.

    Thanks, folks! Good to know.

I’m on the verge of taking the plunge into EE but I’m still gathering info. After years of working in a static site environment, I have to get my head around the entire concept and vernacular, but it seems very promising. I’ve watched the tutorial videos a few times, but would still like to learn more. Any suggestions?

There are a couple of trial options, and I highly suggest taking at least one of them for a spin before making your final decision.  The easiest way to play around is the ‘Hosted Trial’- and it gives you almost the full range of EE options- all of the modules, including the forum.  Downloading ‘Core’ is another way to test things out- you’d install that on your own server (and it’s never a bad idea to give that a shot).  It has fewer modules, but allows you to use php in your templates (handy) and if you’re so inclined, you can skim through the source code and get a feel for that end of things.

A nice thing about EE and Openads: I put the zone code that Openads uses into a Global Variable and can then easily drop the variable anywhere I like in my templates, which also helps if I need to change the code.
