I hope I don’t get in trouble for this

I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts or opinions on Host Monster:
    http://www.hostmonster.com/

I know… I know… EngineHosting, etc… although I currently do have a website hosted on EngineHosting, and it is AWESOME… awesome performance, awesome support… (control panel is… well… VERY lacking - but that’s made up for with the Support) cPanel???? 😛

Anyways, I’m working on a project that doesn’t quite have a hefty budget (to start anyway), so as good as Engine Hosting is, I’ve ruled it out….

So any thoughts on Host Monster?

    Thanks 😊

    Here’s the real deal.

I’d stay away from ANY company offering 300GB of hard drive space and 3terabytes of traffic for 6 bucks per month (notice you have to pay for 2 years to even get that). It’s absolutely not true. In my opinion if they’re going to start out lying to you, how will their regular service be once you sign up?

The resource allocation they’d give you couldn’t possibly use anywhere near that level of space/traffic. It’s a bait sale. they know that almost nobody will use that, and their agreements most likely allows them to cancel anyone that could.

I couldn’t find anything close ot an acceptable use policy (which is a flag by itself) and nothing mentioned in the ToS

    FYI hostmonster is also bluehost

Here’s one review. This site is huge, and though they think they are the end all be all of hosting forums, take this with a grain of salt.

On the flipside here, if you don’t pay for long term hosting, it can’t hurt you just to test them out. if you site is small, and not trafficed in a big way you’d probably be fine. I tend to lean towards ‘you get what you pay for’ and like I said, sites that have to lie in order to get your businesses are usually telling you something.

    Let’s see…$6 vs $10/mnth.
That’s one latte, one cocktail, one gallon of gas, or three cokes, per month difference that gets you a questionable host. Hmmm, think I’ll pass on that cocktail this Friday and sleep well.

Well being cPanel can’t be used in a true load-balanced hosting environment, and you are forced into using all of the server side technology THEY choice for you to run your servers on, no not really an option.  I rather like the idea of being able to select the server side functions we want based on other performance/stability and security factors, no cPanel, Ensim, and the others are useless in this type of setup.  I have touched on this in other threads recently so will stop here…

Thanks Nevin! I appreciate your response!
But wouldn’t you still say the control panel is still lacking? Although, like I said, the Support completely makes up for that part of it.

Thanks everyone else for the responses.

PXLated - is there a host in particular you’re referring to for $10/month?

JT Thompson - I realize that all “cheap” webhosts are generally considered crap or untruthful. You’ll always see bad for any webhost, (in your example it was only 1 guy complaining about a Support response time, and 50 other people rejecting the “scenario”, not personal experiences with Host Monster.
And I’m willing to accept a bit of dirt
I guess I’m just looking for the best of the worst  (for now… anyway)

I’ve used GoDaddy’s webhosting, and to be honest, I’m not really disappointed at all yet. Haven’t had any downtime or troubles whatsoever. Well… besides their poor support.

Please see here for a partial answer to that question.

Last time I looked, the basic EngineHosting plan was $10.

@ PXlated - Yeah, but it’s a pretty slim package… (for what I need anyway)
(you stay away from me Nevin!) 😛 - yes, I understand it’s all quality 😊

@ Nevin - thanks for the link…. yes, I actually read it! :cheese: (although I’d hate to see the FULL answer) 😛
Very informative, I understand now… and am excited about the control panel’s future 😛

Other than a link, you didn’t spell out what you actually need, what’s important.

I think this is an issue that always comes up. What do you really need. Most websites are less than 10mb. So 400 megabytes is more than enough. And if you need more than 10gb of data at site launch, then your budget needs to be reconsidered.

Dreamhost has a great plan that is $10 a month. Be warned though, their uptime/performance *may* not meet your needs.

I would go with EH in a heartbeat if all my photos didn’t take up so much room!!!
