    Hey there,

Was wondering if any EE users based in Australia could help me out.

This is not an EE problem but a general hosting issue I believe. One of my clients contacted me from Sydney to say that our EE site was giving ‘server not found errors’ over the last few weeks. He tried from work, a hotel, conference center, etc.

I’m based in Canada and our web host (asmallorange.com) is in the States, but not sure if this is the problem.

If you’re in Australia and wouldn’t mind helping out for a few minutes, I’d really appreciate it!  I can PM you the site URL—- not sure I want to broadcast our site’s problems! 😉—-

    Cheers,

    Ira

Ira, I am in Australia, so PM me the URL if you want. I will take a look. Are you saying that the site was available to you in the ‘States at the same time it is apparently not available here? That is a little weird

Also, I’m no web monkey but if I’m not mistaken, if its ‘server not found’ it is the name server that is the problem which is not necessarily the same as the server that actually hosts the site, although the end result is the same I suppose. Those in the know will probably be able to give a technical explanation of why this might occur. You should ask your host to investigate regardless.

    Hi Ira,

I’m in Australia and my webhost is in the States.  Never had the problem described no matter where I’ve been in the world and I’ve travelled a fair bit.

Sites blocked from the Aust end tend to have content, um, not allowed (read either illegal or related to a ‘protected’ industry - for instance even if a company in the us allows free downloads of say certain TV shows in Australia you can not legally download them)... am thinking that is not the problem you have.

I do know from some places in the world like say China… quite a few sites are just plain blocked even if they have nothing to do with China or their government, this is not a personal attack of China as there are quite a few Countries who do this for various reasons.  However it is anecdotal from other travellers who have websites who have found that they could not access there sites in certain countries around the world.

Not sure if any of that would apply in your case though.

Thanks to everyone who replied here, and by PM.

In the end, although the site is somewhat slow in Australia, the main issue my client was having was that he was always connecting through his company’s VPN, and there was a problem on their end…

Not a total waste, as I’ve identified some seriously long load times outside of North America.  For some reason, the Tome module / File extention are generating over 5000 (!!) queries on some pages (d’oh!).

Off to optimize.  Thanks again for the help!

    Ira
