Is there a skin similar to the EE home page?

    Hi

    I’m new (I admit it).

I’m pretty much sold on EE and will probably go the whole hog into all the add on’s etc but before getting started I have 2 questions:

    - I love the look of EE’s home page and the features page. I’m wondering if there is a template that is close to that look (yes a static home page). I’m intending to have a forum, RSS, News, comments and some simple flash but all that is going to appear behind the main couple of pages.

Can I use the front page design without ending up behind bars?

    - Is there any instructions on how I can set up my own host machine (in terms of what version of Mysql, Apache and PHP need to be loaded on top of a Linux distro and anything else required)?  A step-by-step would be very handy.

    Thanks

No, no site theme quite like the EE home page, but I’ll ask the crew about incarceration concerns!

As to the setup- the first concern is to make sure your system meets the requirements.  That’s the biggie.  If you control things- I’d make sure it meets the optional requirements and have a good image program in there- GD2 or imagemagick depending on preferences.  I’d run php as a module, not a cgi process.  I’d set the php memory fairly high- particularly if you plan to do much image manipulation (32MB is generally what I go with).  Don’t run MySQL in strict mode.

But generally- the same setup you’d want for any dynamic site.  Make sense?

Are you running Linux, Mac or Windows.  We could probably point you in the right directions for how to get a test machine set up to run EE on, but it would be my sincerest recommendation that you get your site professionally hosted.

There are a number of good hosts out there.  We work a lot with EngineHosting, who are experts in EE hosting, but we also work a lot with other hosts.

The “look” of our site unfortunately isn’t available, and we ask that people not use it, even if they build it themselves, as its part of our identity.
