what’s the biggest site EE can handle in terms of traffic? I have a colleague with a concern about the toll it takes on the server with a site that has massive traffic.

    Could you define “massive traffic”?

Regardless of software design, ‘massive’ traffic will equal a relatively ‘massive’ toll on the servers hardware. Of course EE will be using more than just serving a flat html file, but it’s certainly more efficient than many other CMS.

As opuszine asked, what do you define massive in terms of concurrent usage?

As has been discussed in other threads, it’s more about your server and it’s resources than EE itself. All dynamic systems use more resources though. Search the Forum for posts by Nevin, he’s the EngineHosting guru and has a lot of insights.

Edit-Add: You’re not going to be able to run a “massive” site on a server shared by a thousand other accounts. One needs to match the server setup to one’s traffic…shared > dedicated > load-balanced > etc.

It sounds like the server is more important than the CMS, which I get. My questions is about whether the CMS has been tested with massive traffic yet, and maybe there are some examples of major sites out there than run EE; is so, what are they? I’m talking about 50,000,000 - 100,000,000 page loads per month. Roughly 18,000,000 visitors.

You might have a look at this thread.  Also, if you are needing specific hosting to ensure that your site can handle this amount of traffic, you might send a message to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), I’m sure they can work with you on this. =)
