I’ve created my second site and created a new weblog in it.  When I go to publish there is no body, summary, or extended text.  Where have I gone wrong?

Did you do any import or duplication when creating the MSM? If not, you’ll need to head to Admin -> Weblog Administration and create a new field group then associate it to the weblog.

No I didn’t, the instructions were a bit bewildering on what should be imported :(

Bewildering in what way, Shelagh? If you can let us know where you got lost, then perhaps I can help.

But in short - we can’t be explicit because those instructions change for each site depending on how they’re doing the split. In any case, if it’s a new site - no duplicating or importing, then you’ll need to create that field group yourself =)

Probably in the way that I hadn’t had nearly enough caffeine and nicotine when I read them.  You could help by putting the kettle on 😉

I think part of it is just that I am so new to EE anyway and still fitting together a mental picture of how it all fits together.  I created a couple of custom fields and my publish page now looks more like I expected it to 😊

I’m starting to think it would be simpler to delete the second site and start again or will I seriously screw something up?

Nope, you won’t screw anything up. But why start over, what benefit do you feel would come of that? Perhaps if you can explain the situation a bit then I can help before you put in more work?

I created a new custom field group and assigned it to the blog in the 2nd site.  It has 2 fields “main” and “extended”.  I’ve imported my blog and in the edit entry screen I can see that it’s put the body of the entry in the “main” field.  The problem is with my template (basically borrowed from the first site for now) - where it had {body} I’ve substituted {main}.  I’ve changed the variables at the top of the template to the correct blog but it’s displaying like this http://www.thewholeshebang.org/index.php/

I’m sure the answer is very simple, I’ve just been faffing about with it for so long I can’t see the wood for the trees any more.

That unparsed variable can indicate a few things - a short-name mismatch for the field, the field group not properly associated with the weblog - ok two things.  So make sure the field short-name really is {main} and that your custom field group is assigned to the weblog in question.

I hope that kettle’s nearly boiled!  I’d got the field name and the label the wrong way round in the edit field screen.  Excuse me while I just go and kick the cat.  Thank you for being so patient with me - people like me are why I could never work in Customer Support 😉

Not a worry, Shelagh - I’ve done that a few times, myself. =)
