How do I run a blog, and other sections of a site?

I’m experimenting with the free Core to see if EE will fit my needs, which is to manage a blog, but also maintain other ‘sections’ of a site, each of which contain different custom fields and data types. So for a site that has a blog, and static pages (I’ll need the pages module) and for the 2 other sections that will have sub pages and their own data types do I need to create 2 additional blogs within the CMS to manage those sections separately? I tried that route and setup the custom fields for it and published it and everything worked well, but when I previewed the site I couldn’t view the content at all (just a blank content area in the template), although the titles of my entries for the section appeared in the archives list. Will the pages module give me the ability to create 2 main pages, each of which have their own custom fields/data types, then add sub-pages to each of the two main pages that also have the same custom fields as their parents?

Keep in mind- there are a lot of ways to set things up.  The above makes sense to me- but it really depends on the whole site and how it needs to flow.  The big thing that helps me decide between using categories and weblogs are: access limitations for posting, do I need to have entries in more than one ‘section’- entries can have multiple categories, but they can only be in one weblog- and the custom fields.  Sounds like you need different custom fields, so different weblogs would be the way to go.  So- when it comes to showing the info in your new weblogs?  Sounds like the custom field variable names may not be matching up to the new custom fields you created and assigned to your new weblogs.  You’ll need to go in and edit your templates- if you are using {summary} to show the summary field, but the new weblog has it in a custom field with the shortname {news_summary} you’ll need to flip out the variables in the weblog tag so they match up to your new weblog’s custom field short names.

    That help?
