Are there any sites running EE that have more than 1 million page views a month? If so, does anyone know how the system performs, and would you recommend it for a site that does get over 1million page views a month?

    Thanks!

Those sites often don’t publish their statistics so it is hard to say. You might have a look at this recent thread which lists several of the bigger, EE powered sites.

You might also like to speak with EngineHosting about how they handle sites like ilounge.com.

Sure there are a great number that do, but there is nothing within ExpressionEngine that is going to limit it to 10’s of millions of page views or more being pushed through it.

    It more comes down:

    a) how well you design your templates and optimize your use of EE tags
    b) any php you use in your templates, if you do
    c) how certain plugins and modules are used and how well they were written.
    d) the type of hardware, OS, configuration of performance tuning within php, MySQL, and apache to name a few, etc.

Really even a site with poor logic or usage of EE tags, heavy custom php, or resource intensive plugins/modules can be pushed to support high levels of traffic if you push enough hardware at them as well.

Because of the almost infinite ways you can develop a site using EE, and the complexities of the servers, network and other factors there is no “magic bullet” in defining “with x, you can do y traffic”.  But yes, there are a lot of sites doing far greater than 1 million page views a month. Some are highlighted in the forums here in different threads, others have not publicly shared those types of numbers, but there are a lot of very busy web sites powered by EE out there, without issue.
