MSM vs. Multiple Purchases of EE (confused)

    Bear with me here…

So I have a site running on EE Personal License which I purchased.  I’m thinking of getting another copy for a second site.  Regarding the MSM:

The Multiple Site Manager costs $199.95 (commercial license) and $79.95 (non-commercial license) and enables you to manage 3 Sites (including your primary site). Additional sites can be purchased on a per-instance basis for $49.95 (commercial license) and $24.95 (personal license).

...If I understand this correctly, even if I buy the MSM to manage them, I still need to purchase a new $99 Personal License for my second site.  So every instance of EE needs to be purchased separately, but the MSM can *also* be purchased to connect them.  Is that right?

If so, how does the “additional sites” part work?  Let’s say I own three Personal licenses and the MSM, then I want to set up a fourth site and manage it through the MSM as well.  Would I be paying $99 for the fourth Personal License, *plus* $24.95 to make it run through the MSM?

    Thanks!

    Hi, ZenBug—

Not quite.  You would purchase just the MSM, as long as both sites are Personal, then the Personal version of MSM is fine.

One purchase of the MSM includes 3 sites (the first one, and 2 with the MSM) - then additional sites after that will cost the prices listed in your post.

Have a look at our FAQ.  Just one thing especially to be aware of is about not mixing and matching license types - this entry explains.

Hope that makes a bit more sense. =)

No, the 79.95 would buy you two more non-commercial “sites”, as it were. No additional EE licences required.
