Firstly apologies if I’m asking something that’s already been covered, but I can’t seem to see a thread on this anywhere. I have a client who is managing several sites through one EE installation using the old method. What I’m wondering is if they decide to move to the MSM, just how easy is it going to be to split up these existing templates into new sites? Is it possible to say ‘Assign template group X to site Y’?

Also, just in general, how much work is likely to be needed in making this switch? Are fairly significant template modifications likely to be necessary? Do all of the embeds need to be updated to include a site parameter?

    Thanks,
    Dom

It’s so very easy, Dom =)  But it’s only do-able when you create the initial site.  I think a picture here will help more than my explanation.  Head over to the docs on creating a site and scroll down tot he import options. you’ll see a screenshot that includes all off the possibilities for duplicating or importing your information while in the process of creating a new site.  It is important to note this is only available at the Site’s creation time, not after, but that should not be a problem as long as you know what you want to move or copy over. =)

As far as the amount of work - it really depends, if you need to cross-reference embeds then you’ll need to update them on one of the sites, yes.  You could do this fairly easily with the Find and Replace utility.  I don’t think it’s overly onerous but you certainly may need to tweak your projects a bit depending on how much cross-referencing you want.

Thanks for the response Lisa, my mistake for not having a good look at the docs before posting. It does sound like a relatively pain-free process so I imagine we’ll go ahead with that in the not too distant future.

Don’t worry about it, there’s a lot to learn about and we’re happy to answer questions.  I pointed to the docs both for more information, and because it has some screenshots that help explain it better than words can. =)

You guys really ought to do something about response times you know. Is a 60 second turnaround time too much to ask? 😉

*sighs* I know, we really need to improve.  Thirty seconds? =)
