    This morning I was going to change something in a Forum theme template, only to discover I’m unable to reach any Forum theme templates. When clicking on a Forum theme (any theme, really) the page just comes up blank!

    I’ve done nothing (as far as I know) that could explain this behavior. The only thing I can think of is I made a complete backup of the site yesterday in preparation for upgrading to EE 1.6 and Forum 2.0. But that wouldn’t normally cause this kind of problem, would it?

    I tried to restore the complete forum_themes folder with all forum themes included. I also restored the /system/modules/forum/ folder with the three forum files. To no avail.

    Would it be wise to upgrade to 1.6 + 2.0 as long as this problem exists? What do you think?

    Please help me out. I don’t know what to do next.

    Thanks in advance,
    -Mats

    Mats, using your FTP program, so you actually have a /themes/forum_themes directory? Did the location change?

    There’s a configuration setting for path to themes file. Is that set up right?

    Hello Sue,

    Thanks for looking into this.

    Yes, I have a /themes/forum_themes/ directory. I even restored it earlier today thinking it may have been corrupted. So no change there.

    In Admin > System Preferences > General Configuration I have “URL to your ‘themes’ folder:” set to [name of my root directory]/themes/ . No change there either.

    What’s next on the checklist?

    It’s just a plain blank page?  Sounds like a php error for some unkown reason.  Odd that it should just stop working with no change on your end.  Could be something changed server side?

    I personally prefer to have everything working before upgrading- if possible.  You didn’t upgrade just the forum?  Or just the site?  Doesn’t sound like it.  If you didn’t do something like that, let’s see if we can force an error.  You’ve got ‘display php errors’ showing for admins in the system prefs?  If so, let’s try forcing things- ftp in, grab the system/index.php file- the one INSIDE your system folder, not the one a level up.

    Open it up- look for:

    error_reporting(0);

    change to:

    ini_set('display_errors', 1);
    error_reporting(E_ALL);

    Let’s see if that gets us anything to work with.

    Hey Robin,

    Coming to my rescue again… Thanks!

    I followed your instructions, and this is what I came up with:

    Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 90066 bytes) in /home/credoakademin.nu/www/s_y_s_t_e_m/cp/cp.display.php on line 2007

    I think I saw this one some time ago in connection with another problem. The solution then was that my host changed a setting or two, if I remember it correctly.

    How do you interpret this? Time to give my host a call again, huh?  😊

    Hee- yep, time to give the host a yell.  You need to have them up your php memory- I think 8mb is the default (and my bet is that’s what it currently is)- which is awfully low.  16 should be fine for most stuff- you might still run into an issue with large image process (very memory intensive).  Personally, I like it around 32mb.  But I’d say 16mb minimum- IMO.

    (They may tell you to do it via an htaccess file- can on some hosts.  But best thing to do- just contact them and ask.)

    I’ll call them first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks, Robin!  😊

    = = =

    One more question when we’re at it… After I get this forum problem fixed, do you think I can get a response to this thread. You see, we have hundreds of people visiting our forums every day, and we need a simple way for them to view new posts since last time they logged in. And currently it’s not working the way I believe it’s supposed to, and I don’t know why.

    Cheers,
    -Mats
