This isn’t a knock against EE or anyone at EllisLab, as EE is not the culprit here.  That being said…

I attempted to upgrade to 1.6 this fine early morning.  As is my custom, I went through the fresh version and modified it in the usual places (I keep a file of these for reference), and stuck the forum module in with its brothers and sisters.  Then I followed the offline suggestions and started to update my files.

Since I customize so much in my system folder (modules, plugins, some hacks, etc.), I tend not to do a straight overwrite (plus I’d lose my config file).  So I dragged all the directories that were okay to replace into the system directory on the server, and all went well so far.  While this was going on, I updated a few other things, such as adding control panel images, updating themes, etc.  I also attempted to delete caches from within Transmit (which may have been a mistake).

Finally, everything finished… except now I was getting errors.  When I finally clicked through all of these, I looked at my EE installation and… uh… okay, what happened to my system directory?  I know I didn’t rename it… I looked through the other directories and it was nowhere to be found!  Not good, not good at all.

So, because of said customizations (and my config file as well), I decided to restore the entire domain to a backup I made before I began the process.  I’d run into trouble before along these lines, so I decided to play this safe before beginning, in case anything like this happened.  So Plesk is humming along, restoring my backup, when I get the following error:

Execution of /.../.../domain.php --update dtgeeks.com -hosting true -hst_type phys -ip 209.132.XXX.XXX -webstat webalizer -login xxxxxxx -passwd -shell /bin/false failed with return code 1.
    Stdout is
WARNING: Option "-hard_quota" is ignored: hard disk quota is not supported
    Stderr is
An error occured during domain update: error in hosting updating: Unable to update hosting preferences: Unable to get hosting ip address id.

User say wha-?!!  So now you’re telling me that even my BACKUP won’t work????  AUUGGGHHH!!!  What’s a guy to do?  Fortunately, my host is a friend of mine, so when he wakes up I’ll bug him until he fixes this… but still, until then, the entire site is offline, and email will probably go down sooner or later as well, if it hasn’t yet.  *Le sigh*

So yeah, that’s the state of Deep Thought: stuck at the default Plesk page.  Hopefully, I can get this resolved soon, because, as with any good web admin, I’d like to minimize downtime as much as possible.  I know these things happen, but that’s why you make backups… the backups aren’t supposed to get corrupted at the same time!  Ech… I’ll keep you guys informed as events unfold.

EDIT:  As you can see from reading down, everything is working again.  Title modified to reflect the best part about all this. 😉

Boo! If I were in your shoes I would be crying right now. I’d possibly throw some stuff around and take my frustrations out on inanimate objects—you know, throwing pens around and having a general tantrum. Then, when I finally settled down, I’d look at my feet and ask, ‘why am I wearing Arden’s shoes?’

    O MELISSAH U R WERTH 10 LOLS PER SEC!!!!11one

Really, Arden, what terrible luck. It’s bad enough that the update went sour, but corrupted backups? Please do let us know how it all pans out. Until then, have some IRC hugs C. 1997:

Well, all’s well that ends well.  The backup itself wasn’t corrupted, just the restoration script.  My host/buddy managed to restore it properly, and it seems to be back to normal, FTP access and everything.  I should be doing this again soon, hopefully in a more proper manner.

And really, who wouldn’t want to be walking around in these:

Well, I haven’t gotten to the update again yet.  Been busy with other things.  But soon, very soon, I’m sure.
