Template Routes Containing Variables Ignored

All my template routes that contain a variable ({segment_2},{year},{url_title}, etc) are defaulting to the template group index.

e.g.

this template route
```
/about/blog/{year}/{month}/{day}/{url_title}
```
is set for the
```
blog/entry
```
group/template.

but the url
```
/about/blog/2014/07/03/url-title-here
```
loads the template
```
about/index
```
If I hardcode the year, month, day and url-title into the route it loads.
This goes for any routes that contain a {segment_x} variable—loads the template group index.
