I’ve just installed a fresh site with EE core 2.9.1 and when trying to create a new channel nothing happens. The page just reloads. Not had this ever before so assume it’s a problem with this release? Is there a workaround by creating the channel in SQL?

Just experienced this myself and submitted a support ticket. Creating in SQL would be a PIA as multiple tables are affected.

Same deal here, refreshes the page and puts a notice at the top of
“Core is a free, feature-limited edition of ExpressionEngine. Upgrade Now to get all the features. New in 2.8.0: Template Routes and Memory-based Caching!”
According to the site, however, channel creation should be permitted using the core package.

2.9.2 (apparently released in the last 48 hours) fixes this issue.
