I did everything they said in the update tutorial.
Point your browser to your Control Panel, and follow the on-screen instructions to update ExpressionEngine.
At this point, no “on-screen instructions” come up. I just see the website and control panel like nothing happened. Version still displays 2.7…..
Could it be because I renamed system, admin.php and index.php?
Shouldn’t the tutorial mention what to do in this case seeing how it’s an officially recommended security measure?

Oh, awesome. I can’t save changes to the layout (sidebar > publish layout) anymore.
~10 EE websites and I’ve never encountered this. Hope this is not related to the failed (?) update. 😠

Don’t rename index.php.
1 rename the folder system, let say “blabla”
2 open index.php, and change this line (27): $system_path = ‘./system’; in $system_path = ‘./blabla’;

Oh yeah, I mixed that up. I did not rename index.php, only admin.php and system.
