    This has me quite stumped:

On a site set up for development, I’m trying to add a few new custom Channel Fields to a particular Channel. But upon saving any new field, the page will go white with the text “Status: 404 Page Not Found.”

I’ve looked around for a few days, but can’t seem to find a clear path to understanding what is occurring.

I do have a local version of the site up and running, and this issue does not occur.

I’ve also noticed this happening on another project that is on the same server.

    Any thoughts?

    I was previously using

    <a href="http://www.mysite.com/system">http://www.mysite.com/system</a>

to sign in to the admin area.

    Instead, signing in at

    <a href="http://www.mysite.com/admin.php">http://www.mysite.com/admin.php</a>

    seems to fix everything.

    Hope this helps!

Also check that under Admin/General Configuration that “URL to your Control Panel index page” has the full URL:

    http://www.yoursite.com/system/index.php

Why does this work??? and how can I get it to work via logging in via /system
Is there some sort of permissions issue?

I’m getting the same issue and went though several time consuming updates and clean installs to try and fix this with no luck.

I would just like to understand what the problem is or could be.

    Aubrey,

You don’t indicate in your question whether you have checked that under Admin/General Configuration that the field, “URL to your Control Panel index page” has the full URL:

    http://www.yoursite.com/system/index.php

    Is that set up?

Yeah checked that first thing. That was the first obvious one to check. All was and is good.

Came across some other posts though which indicate a potential permissions issue on the server.

For some reason some servers will set a default permission on theme files - and in particular the custom_field.js which is set to 644.

Comparing a service that works the same file is set to 664 by default.

I’m thinking this may be enough to throw it.

    What do you think?
