I am trying to simplify the interface of EE so non-computer savvy users can edit certain web pages. I want to make it so that each department can only view their specific pages. For example, If I am part of the ‘sports’ department, when I go to content—> edit—> pages, I can only see the category of sports pages. Any help in making this possible would be much appreciated!

Also, I have entry access and member categories - but they don’t work exactly the way I want them to. My goal is to make certain categories of pages invisible in the editor.

You can’t do this natively to the category level. 

One option is to split up your categories into channels so you can map member groups to them. Remember you can pipe multiple channels back together in a channel:entries if you need to aggregate them again.

Have you actually had issues with people not being able to figure out how to edit what they wanted or editing the wrong stuff?

Have you implemented the “Edit This” front-end link approach (creating a link that shows up on the front end when they are logged into the back end)? I find this helps a lot- users can find the content by navigating the front end of the site, then click the link, and be taken right to the CP in edit mode for that content.

Save that as {snp_edit_this} then use that snippet inside any channel:entries loop.
