I read through all the comments on the blog post about finding a new maintainer of CodeIgniter.
I’m not a full-time developer so I’m not sure I understand 100% the implications. I understand that CodeIgniter will be set free and perhaps another group will continue it. The focus though for my post is on EE itself. CI and EE progress went hand and hand didn’t it? So if EE continues, that means the framework will evolve, becoming some custom proprietary framework? Is one of the strengths of EE that because CI is out in the open, that developers can get a leg up in developing for EE? (plugins, modules, etc)

I notice that PyroCMS is dumping CI and switching to Laravel framework. Is it better to select a CMS that is based on something that has a greater developer base? Is it possible that EL will select such a modern framework like Laravel or YII or Symphony?

Hmm.. I’m, having trouble asking the question that I want to! How to put in words?
Kinda I want to say ...how can EE get better without also the framework underneath it getting better? Don’t developers need a great framework in order to create a great app? The blog post said something along the lines of ‘we want to focus on our app.’ The message long ago was something like ‘we have this great new framework that is allowing for the foundation of an awesome CMS.’

I probably asked the wrong questions. lol.

I need to just get a sense of whether starting with EE now is the best way to go for a new project. This project is pretty large and will run a long time. Or am I better off starting with a modern/new CMS+framework combo like PyroCMS or Processwire, etc etc. (any other recommendations?)

    Thanks!!!

EE has long run on it’s own rather specialized version of CI.

I don’t worry that EL wanting to offload the public version of CI will affect EE in a negative manner but rather the opposite.
