I’m trying to upgrade from 2.5.5 to 2.6.0.  And I only get a blank page after agreeing to the survey.  Nothing at all.

    PHP version 5.3.17
    MySQL version 5.0.96

If anyone else has this problem, I managed to upgrade by reuploading the new version, and follow the upgrade instructions, except moving the third party folder, and moving it after finishing the install.  I hope this doesn’t break anything else.  This has been officially the upgrade from hell.

    Hi Kaori,

I thank you a million times. 😊I spent 5 hrs doing an upgrade from 2.5.5 to 2.6.1. Last upgrade to 2.5.5 only took a few hours. This one, like you, was the upgrade from hell.
The fix, as you correctly identified, was to replace the third party folder with a blank folder of same name. I don’t know how you found it, but thanks very much.

Now to start my days work. Argh!!!

Rather than spending hours on updates, I recommend checking out “Updater” add-on from DevDemon. For $15, it saves TONNES of time:

I’ve used it on 3 updates so far and had no problems.

(No, I don’t work for them, just happy with the product) 😉

Wow wow wow…. I can’t believe, after all these years of EE development, how difficult it STILL is to update an EE install…?!?!?!

Millions of installs, variations, tens of thousands of themes and plugins for Wordpress, and it’s a simple button click to update…

Anyway, THANK YOU so much for figuring out the “Third Party” folder contents issue. Have been working for several hours, first with the UPDATER Module (which is amazing but still failed to update EE 2.5.5 to 2.6.1) and then just a plain old file swap EE update and it still wouldn’t work until I emptied the “Third Party” directory.

Seriously, why can’t they update the Update docs and make these suggestions?

Not everyone has had to do the 3rd party folder swap to upgrade 2.6.x. Could it be a certain add-on?  Maybe anyone who’s had to do this should list the add-ons they have installed and we can see if there is a common thread.

Great idea! Happy to share mine in case that helps anyone in the future or find a pattern.

Not all of these are activated or used. It’s just a listing of my Third Party folder so it’s easier to match against other’s:
