Is it possible to install EE 2 on an EE 1 database without upgrading?

I’ve recently done an EE 1 upgrade which did not go entirely smoothly, which may relate in part to the host I’m using.

I’m going to change hosting providers, but this got me to thinking about the path to upgrading to EE 2. Do I need to install the whole shebang, including EE 1, to start with and then upgrade to EE 2? Or can I just copy across the database file and then point an EE 2 install at it?

I would get the install running smooth with EE 1.7.x and then move that and once it is running, do the upgrade. DOn’t introduce too many variables in a move.

I have taken installs into MAMP and done the upgrade there and then moved the install to a new server with success.
