Today, I moved a site to a different server.  I followed the guide to moving Expression Engine and everything went smoothly except for one small problem:

Whenever I try to login to the member area on the front end it results in a 500 internal server error (it’s the submission of the form - I can submit with invalid member details and it still results in 500).

If anyone has any ideas, it would be muchly appreciated!

    Thanks

    All sorted 😊

For anyone else who may have this weird issue, but I don’t expect anyone else will, it must have been an FTP upload issue.  I traced my way through the code for members and eventually figured out that my /system/expressionengine/modules/member/mod.member_auth.php file was empty (ie 0 bytes).  Got the correct file from my backups (cannot stress how important these are!) and away we went!

This got me thinking: “I wonder how many other files failed to upload properly…”.

After a quick Google I found this page detailing how to search for 0 byte files in Windows 7 - http://www.ehow.com/how_5804210_zero_byte-files.html

I just about fell off my chair when I looked at the results!  There must have been a dozen files that didn’t upload correctly!

My new question is: What does everyone use for an FTP client?  At the moment, we use Filezilla for all the bulk uploads and NCH Fling File transfer set to automatic for single file uploads during development (really really handy!).

    Hey there DigitalDoctors,

I am glad you found the resolution.

I personally use FileZilla as well. If you want a lot of opinions from the community on which FTP program to use, I would as that question in the Community Help Forum.

Is there anything else I can help with?

    Cheers,

    Hi Shane,

Thanks for the response.  I’m all good now.  I’m umming and ahhing over whether it’s filezilla or our sub-par New Zealand internet that’s to blame!

    Thanks
