How would I go about adding a couple of columns to the Edit Channel Entries screen?

Also I’d like to change the formatting of the categories tab, on the edit entry screen. (currently all displayed in one column with a huge amount of wasted white space)

Is it possible to implement two category groups on one channel and if so how do I go about it?

If so I’m wondering how I can split one existing category into 2 without deleting all the entries and recreating them in a second category group.

    Thanks guys!

    Hello j00lz,

    Welcome to the forums!

    Thank you for your question.

You can use different themes in the Control Panel, including creating your own. But doing this through the GUI is not possible. There is no option for adding columns and such. If you feel like creating your own theme, that would be great!

You will need to stick with one category group per channel. You can have one category group and reuse it among several channels.

I am not aware of a way to split a category group in that way, maybe duplicate and they whittle id down.

    I hope this helps!

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Shane,

I’ve looked into the themes but as far as I can see they are only for visual ‘skinning’ of the CP.

So for example I want to add data a custom field into the table view on the Edit Channel Entries screen.

I know this is possible in Wordpress using ‘hooks’

    something like this:
    http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/creative-coding/add-a-custom-column-in-posts-and-custom-post-types-admin-screen/

How does one go about implementing the same functionality in EE?

I’ve been reading up on the Add-On development section of the user guide but still not managed to get a clear idea of how to go about this.

For the record I’m developing a fairly complex site and was persuaded to use EE over WP. I decided to bite the bullet and buy the software but am having trouble getting up to speed… I like the overall paradigm of EE but find it’s taking me a long time to understand how to do relatively small things like this…. (due to a relative lack of examples and tutorials) I’m actually writing the site both in WP and EE as parallel runs and working out how to do things like this is really bugging me.

    Hope someone can help!

    Hey there j00lz,

Right. That view of entries to be added is not a page that you can edit. Well at least not without touching the core files. Which you are welcome to do, it’s just not set up for this. Where you can really change things is in publish layouts, but that is for publishing, not viewing the editing table. 😊

I would love to help you with anything you need. I know the learning curve is pretty steep for ExpressionEngine, but it is really worth it! I started with WP years ago when it first branched off from B2. ExpressionEngine is 1000X more useful and I would never go back.

If you have not, it’s worth going through Mike’s book. It’s how I took the dive.

    Cheers,

Thanks Shane for your attempt at helping me.

Maybe I should be seeking support in the Code Igniter forums instead…..

It seems a real shame that there is no plug-in support for such a simple client request as this.
Editing the core files is going to make upgrading a pain in the proverbial later on :(

EE maybe appear 1000x more useful for YOU however it is proving to be 1000x more problematic for me as a developer.

Is there anyone here who maybe able to explain plugins and extensions to me…. and if they are the right tree to be barking up… or do I really need to edit the core files ?

    Hey j00lz,

Sorry about that. There is nothing native but there are a few Add-Ons that will make the Control Panel more flexible.

You can use Publish Layouts and WB Category Select to “split categories” and avoid the long list of check-boxes. That might get you what you are after with the categories.

There are also two Add-Ons that will allow you to really customize things. Check out Zenbu and Flexible]http://devot-ee.com/add-ons/zoo-flexible-admin]Flexible Admin[/url].

Let me know if that helps you out.

    Thanks Shane,

I was (and still am) looking for resources/pointers to aid at creating my own plugin to achieve something much similar.

I’m sure I could achieve what I’m looking for with one of those plugins but at the moment want to try and learn EE rather than just resorting to buying addons.

    Hi j00lz,

    Gotcha.

You might ask this in the Development and Programming forum then. That is a great place to get mentoring.

If you need anything else, please just let me know by opening a new thread.

    Cheers,
