I have a client that has 2 member registration channels, and they need a different activation email sent out depending on the member group they are registering too.
I assume that EE (currently version 2.4) will not support this as standard and may require some custom coding to get it to work?

Thank so much for your question.
You are correct, out of the box ExpressionEngine is not able to determine which group a user belongs to when shooting off that activation email.
You might try this Add-On. It looks like you can specify different templates to be used for the email.
When you get some time, you might consider upgrading to 2.5.3. Not for this feature, but just in general.
