Licensing / Pricing Model Question

    Hi,

I run a one-man web-business and have been producing websites with Joomla for many years, however I feel that Joomla can be too difficult for the client to maintain.  This has lead me to look at Expression Engine as a possible alternative.

I understand that every live client site needs to have a license (whether commercial or not-for-profit), my question is: who should be the owner of that license?  Me (the developer) or the client?

From reading through the EE forum, I understand that licenses are transferable, therefore if I develop a site and at some stage in the future the client moves on (god forbid!) and ceases to use the EE site, the license is then able to be used on another site.

In piecing together a pricing structure, I thought of the following model:

In cases where I am hosting the client’s website, I would pay for and own the EE license for their website; absorbing the license cost within the hosting fees.  Then if a client discontinues with their website/hosting, I would be able to use the license again on another site.  Or if a client chooses to move the site to another host, I would have them buy the license from me.

If the client chooses to use their own hosting from the start, I would pass ownership and cost for license to the client.

Would this pricing/licensing structure adhere to the licensing agreement for EE?  Or, can you suggest a model that would work better?

I am also interested to know how I could qualify for an evaluation copy of EE, as I haven’t yet tried it out, and have jumped the gun by looking at pricing models!! 😊

    Thank you for your support,
    Justin
