Splitting sites over 2 databases and 2 system folders

We came up against a problem where the channel_data table could no longer support the amount of custom fields we needed when using MSM.

So one alternate solution we’ve thought of is to separate out the sites across 2 system folders and databases. We needed 9 sites and we will then effectively have 5 on one db and 4 on the other.

The down side to this is that we can no longer manage all sites using one login, but at least we can get all sites working. I’ve done a test by simply coping the system folder into a different subdirectory and then changing the path in the index.php and admin.php sub folder we have on the server to point to the new folder.

Long and short is that we have 9 country sites all coming off the one domain (eg, domainname.com/uk, domainname.com/fr, etc.) In the sub folder for fr I am then pointing those files to the new system folder which accesses a different database.

My main concern though, is how does this work with licensing? So far we’ve purchase 1 EE license, 1 MSM license (which comes with 3 site licenses) and 6 extra site licenses, giving us the ability to have 9 sites. Would the new way still be ok with licensing? If not, what do we have to do?

All our issues would effectively be solved though if we could use the same custom channel fields across all sites. If anybody knows a way of doing this any assisstance would be brilliant.

    Thanks.
