    I haven’t seen this happen before, but I’m working on a new site and having an odd problem with the RTE field.  This is with EE 2.5.2.

    Every time I create an entry that contains an RTE field, after I save that entry, a question mark is inserted at the beginning of the text.  It is not there when I’m entering the text - I’ve even made sure by only using the source window and just using straight html.  But after I save the entry, and go back to view it, the question mark is there within the first html tag (the first p tag for example).  If I edit that entry again and remove the question mark, it doesn’t come back.  It’s very odd, but I can’t figure out anything that would be causing this.  Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hey Stephen T,

    Yikes, that’s really, really odd.

    Hmmm, are you using any Add-Ons that apply to the Control Panel or the UI in anyway?

    Is this an RTE field on the front end or the backend? If it’s on the front end, can I see the form and how you are calling the RTE field?

    I am stuck after those two ideas. Let me know and we can go from there.

    Thanks Stephen,

    Hi Shane,

    Yes, it is really odd.  The only add-on I’m using that applies to the CP UI is Draggable, but I use that on every EE site I’ve built and have never had this issue.  Just to double check, however, I uninstalled Draggable and submitted a test entry, but the question mark was still being added.  I’m only using two other 3rd party add-ons here - Matrix and Low Events.

    I’m only using the CP for these entries - not the front end.

    Any other ideas?  I’m stumped where else to look.

    Also, just to add on to this - the RTE is adding all sorts of br tags to the code after I submit the entry.  If I put in some content like this:

    lorem ipsum
    <ul>
    <li>lorem</li>
    <li>ipsum</li>
    </ul>

    and submit the entry, the code is saved correctly.  But if I go back into that entry to edit it, the RTE field source code now looks like this:

    lorem ipsum

    <ul>

    <li>lorem</li>

    <li>ipsum</li>

    </ul>

    Honestly, the RTE field has been so problematic for me in every site that I’ve used it that I’m not comfortable handing it over to clients.  The way it adds in br tags when I paste content into it and the fact that it uses b and i tags instead of strong and em tags has convinced me that I’m going to need to continue to pay for 3rd party editors, unfortunately.  I’d still like to figure this issue out, but I think I’m going to have to switch to a 3rd party editor regardless.

    Hey Stephen T,

    That is really frustrating. I am sorry your experience with the RTE has been a bad one so far.

    I think it is time to get a look.

    Please be on the lookout for an email from EllisLab.

    Thank you,
