This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I’m not receiving emails notifying me of pending comments. I have another EE site on the same server that’s working fine at the same task, so I’m a bit perplexed. Here’s what I’ve done/know:
    - I have moderation enabled
    - Email protocol is PHP mail
    - In Channel prefs I’ve tried both “Notify the author…” and “Enable recipient list below for comment…” (with two email addresses defined, which is ideally what I want to work)
    - I get a “success” message when posting
    - I can send emails fine using the Tools -> Communicate
    - The email_test.php script from Utilities works properly
    - I’m using EE v2.5.2

Thanks in advance for any insights!

    Hi Ammon,

You’ve done a good bit of troubleshooting already! Excellent!

Let’s get in for a closer look. Be on the lookout for an email from EllisLab!

    Cheers,

Aha- after a bit of poking around, it turned out that the server prefers a return address that matches the domain- which is not that unusual, as noted in the email troubleshooting section of the docs:

Check that Return email address for auto-generated emails contains a valid e-mail address. (Some servers may require outgoing emails to be sent from an email address on the domain that EE is running on. If debugging shows a 553 error, make certain the return address complies with this requirement.)

Though in this case- it was giving us a success message in the email debug- which is why it took some poking.

And all is looking good now!
