Migrating to new server issues

We have just migrated our site to a new server and followed the instructions for this configuration in the user guides as well as in the forums but are still having issues. Our main problem is that none of our linked pages for the site are working (returning a 404 Not Found error). I am not sure if this has to do with something we are missing in Cpanel or if templates and/or other files are missing from the file directory.

I have a support ticket submitted with hosting as well and they mentioned a missing ‘member’ folder at the root directory but I don not have this folder in my local copy. Could this be the issue?

    Hi ejnote,

Welcome to the forums and ExpressionEngine!

I’m sorry for the trouble after the move! If you’ve followed all the steps in Moving ExpressionEngine to Another Server then it could be in the templates.

One idea would be the way links are built in the templates. If they were built with a “hard-codec” domain like:

    <a href="http://domain.com/link/to/article">http://domain.com/link/to/article</a>

    Then those would break. ExpressionEngine provides several variables to help when building link, the most common being {path}

    <a href="http://{path=template-group/template}">{title}</a>

That method will automatically supply the site’s URL when it builds the link, and that will be updated when you move a site.

I have a support ticket submitted with hosting as well and they mentioned a missing ‘member’ folder at the root directory but I don not have this folder in my local copy. Could this be the issue?

ExpressionEngine doesn’t have that folder by default. Was it something you added in development?

    Hi Dan,

Thanks for the welcome looking forward to getting up to speed with EE. I wasn’t the original developer and am still fairly new to ExpressionEngine so feeling my way around and doing a lot of testing as I go, but enjoying learning.

I think the second question about the missing folder is not an issue at all. I double checked an older copy of my local files and did not see the ‘member’ folder either.

So to the main issue. I tried the href paths you sent and several variations all while viewing the source to verify the link path. This was the original path:

    <a href="/events">Events</a>

And this is the only configuration that I could get to work that showed the correct link path:

    <a href="http://{path=/events}">Events</a>

I also reviewed the Moving Expression Engine to Another Server again just to verify I set everything up correctly and I’m pretty sure it is all set there. However, when looking around the files on the server I could not find any template files. Should these be in a folder? I exported a copy of the templates from the CPanel so if need be I can load them to the appropriate folder.

Just thinking out load on what could be the issue. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi ejnote,

I think it would be good for me to get a look at what’s happening here. Once I have it nailed down, we can use it as a learning process for you as well!

Be on the lookout for an email from EllisLab!

    Cheers,

    Dan,

After more testing and research we found out it was a missing .htaccess file. This had some custom configuration that was set up by the original dev team. I really appreciate your help. I’m sure I will be back on here soon. Next step is to upgrade to the newest version.

So glad Dan could help, Eric. Just checking before I close this one up: is there anything else you posted about here that you still need help with?
