We are having problems with activating new mambers on the site. People who sign up are not receiving their verification email to allow them to logon to market data page of our website, when I go on to activate pending members I see an error message as below -

“HTTP 500 - Most likely causes:
    The website is under maintenance.
The website has a programming error.”

Please can you help me to rectify this issue.

    Hi, Lester -

    Welcome to the forums.

I am sorry you are having this difficulty.  I do not see you as having a license; I need to ask you to email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) so that we can work out your license information as we’ll need that to get you support.

    Hi Lester -

Thank you for working with me privately.  I’ve moved this to the proper technical support forums.

Error 500s are server errors - have you asked your host or system administrator about looking through the error logs to see what might be causing this?

Can you also let us know what version you are on?

    Thank you.

    We are running 1.6.4

I am the system administrator - although this was kind of thrown on me and I’m not completly sure what to do. How would I check the error logs?

    Kind regards, Celia

    Hi, Celia -

Is this a professionally hosted web site? If so, you’ll want to contact your host’s support to get that information.

    Hi Lisa/Support

I am colleague of Celia, and I have now taken over looking at this issue.

We host the site internally using EE 1.6.4 on Ubuntu 8.04.3, but unfortunately the person who originally configured the system is no longer with the company.  I work in the IT department, but unfortunately I don’t have much knowledge of Apache, and even less of EE or PHP. I can’t see any relevant errors in Apache log, is there a specific EE log I should be checking?

Everything else in the control panel seems to work perfectly, and users can activate their own accounts.  So far, the only issue I’m aware of is when attempting to access “Activate Pending Members” we get the generic “HTTP 500” error.

Not really knowing the architecture of EE makes it a little difficult to know where to go from here, so any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Lewis

    Hi Lewis,

ExpressionEngine does keep some logs, but the exact errors or clues will be in the apache logs.

Is your server available for us to come in for a closer look? Perhaps with our eyes on the situation we can point you in the right direction?

Be on the lookout for an email from EllisLab.

    Cheers,

Looks like the resolution on this one was to raise PHP’s memory_limit a bit, from 16MB to 20MB.
