I’m entering uncharted territory with EE for my experience and need some advice. A couple of needs:

* I need to be able to customize the user registration information with custom fields and hide fields I don’t need. It would also be nice to be able to use my EE site templates for the forms. Important: I also need to be able to assign the entries of a channel as a custom field for the members as well. Is this possible? I’m looking at the User plug-in from Solspace. Will it accomplish these things? And can you populate a custom field with the entries from a channel?

* I’m also going to start creating custom SAEF forms using custom templates and custom fields. They’re primarily registration forms (not USER registration forms) for signing up for events, etc. For the most part—this information should go into a channel and create an email notification. Should I just use the built-in functionality in EE? Or is there a plug-in that you consider a must-have for this?

This is exactly what Zoo’s Visitor excels at.

There isn’t a whole lot of choice in the SAEF arena these days. EllisLab acquired SafeCracker and has incorporated it into the Core of ExpressionEngine. I’ve used it for just the thing you describe and it worked really well.

Do you recommend Zoo Visitor over User? I haven’t used either.

I will Dan chime in as well.

I have used both and they both have their strengths. I like Zoo Visitor because I have worked with it more than User and I love the “look and feel” of the tool.

What about working with the both side by side? We also wants to use Solspace Friends, and for that maybe User is needed?
