Is there a way to hide closed entries in Relationship fields?

On the front end or the back end?
If the front end, the reverse related entries tag has a status parameter:
If on the back end, you might need to switch to Playa for a more controlled list of entries.

In the back end.
And shouldnt hiding closed entries be the default behaviour without paying another 75 bucks…?
