After extremely light blogging for the past few years, I’m thinking of updating my blog (bigpicweblog.com) to the latest version of EE. I need to update the theme as well.
What are some good themes for a news-oriented weblog?

Your best bet is to port one of the many wordpress themes to EE - have a look at http://www.darrenhoyt.com/2007/08/05/wordpress-magazine-theme-released/ which is a free theme.
