During an update from 2.3.1 to 2.5, I received this database error while running the installer.

    A database error occurred
    Error Number: 1060
    Duplicate column name ‘can_search’
ALTER TABLE exp_member_groups ADD COLUMN can_search char(1) NOT NULL default ‘n’
    Filename: updates/ud_009.php
    Line number: 112

After this error, I dropped all the tables from this DB then imported from my backup. I also checked all the permissions according to the “troubleshooting upgrade error” article. Now when I run the installer I do not receive an error but it just returns the 404 page.

    Hello janitor,

I am sorry to hear you are running into this problem.

Is this the first attempt to upgrade? I have seen this error but not on the first upgrade try.

It sounds like you have followed this document for recovery from a failed upgrade. It could be this 404 is coming from misconfigurations in your index and admin .php files. Can you double check those?

Also, the upgrade may have failed badly, can you check your config.php file for the version number? Does it say “250”?

    Please let me know!

    Cheers,

    Hi Shane,

Thanks for the reply. This error did occur on the first attempt to upgrade. I had to roll back to my previous 2.3.1 installation yesterday to get the site back online so I’m trying to troubleshoot the problem before my second attempt. The version number is 231 now. My url structure may be causing a misconfiguration in the index and admin file. This site is still in production and I’m developing on a temporary server IP address (e.g. http://209.11.111.111/sitename.com/index.php). Could that be causing the update to fail?

    Hi janitor,

How are you using the ip address? Is this on a LAMP stack?

The error makes me think you need to roll back to the backup and try again. This document is going to really help with that process.

    Cheers,

I’ve rolled back my files and database to the previous version 2.3.1, and now I’m getting errors in the control panel.

Unable to load requested field type file: ft.rte.php.
Confirm the fieldtype file is located in the expressionengine/third_party/ directory

I assume this is a leftover from the rich text editor part of the update. I’m not sure why it’s throwing this error since I have restored all of the files and the database. Should I address these issues before I make a second attempt to update to 2.5?

    Hello janitor,

    Is the Add-On still enabled?

    You should disable it.

    Thank you,

    Hi,

I have the same problem upgrading from 2.3.1 to 2.5.1

Before I go through the tedius process of rolling back, is there another way to resolve??

    Update (for me only):

Went through my update steps again and found that I had not pulled over the config and database files to the right folder ! (trialing out a new ftp client).  I’m all fine again now.  Well at least as far as this EE update is concerned 😉
