The image button in the new Textarea (Rich Text) fieldtype in EE 2.5 adds the HTML5 <figure> and <figcaption> tags to handle the image and caption in a entry. This is great for newer browsers but browsers like IE 8 do not recognize the tags and thus can not be styled. I’m curious to see how folks are handling this or have any recommendations? Do you use html5shiv or is there something else in EE that can make this consistent in browsers?

I’d suggest using html5shiv to be safe. Though I think if you declare ‘figure’ in your CSS and make it a block level element, IE will then recognise it.

I’m not 100% on that, but seem to remember having done that in the past.

Personally I am trying to change the button to remove this code. I cant stand it when editors insist on inserting code where it thinks I need it! I jut want an image. This default code is ruining my layout.

Agreed.  I just want an image too.  Any luck with this?

I created a new image button for the editor but the button image didn’t work, it was a bit more complicated than it should be. There were other issues removing the code I didn’t want too so gave up and reverted to Wygwam. Might try again soon. Can’t find any support on the rte tool button image. Its linked to the core rte.css file and sprite for images. Such a massive shame because EE needs a RTE, we shouldn’t have to keep buying third party add ons for core Cms functionality, so until this is fixed I have to. RTE is new so I can understand it may have some issues so hope they can be resolved soon because I really want to use a built in solution.

Thanks for the info.  I feel the same way and am going back to Wygwam as well.  I’d definitely prefer to get this done via the built in solution.
