    Hi there,

    We have a large client who has updates their media-heavy website daily.  They have no knowledge of image resizing, and consistently rotate their team, making it difficult to educate them on the benefits and process.

    The images they upload range from 1500 to 4000px w/h - usually in an uncompressed JPG format. (200kb - 1.5mb)

    We’d really like to add something to the site that automatically downsizes the images as they publish (so their audience only ever see optimised images).

    I’m aware of the ‘CE Image’ plug-in, but have been told that it probably wouldn’t handle the load.  I’ve also heard that ImageMagick might handle the load, but am not aware of how you would go integrating it with EE.

    If anyone might have some expertise or advice it would be really appreciated!

    EE 2 has image resizing in File Manager. Have you had a look at it?

    I have, but unfortunately the client just has no ability to understand how to properly crop/resize.  Using the in-built tool to create multiple sizes of the same image is way beyond their capabilities.

    Ultimately I’d like to find a solution that does it all on the fly.  Resizes as necessary for all the positions the image will be used.

    Eg. Each image might have a thumbnail, large thumbnail, medium, large size.  They won’t be cropped - just resized according to fixed width values (and compressed/converted to jpg if necessary).

    The client doesn’t have to understand anything. All you need to do is- create image variations in the file upload preferences (thumbnail, large thumb, medium and large). Everytime the client uploads an image, all the other variations are created on the fly. This is much faster than resizing images in the templates using imgsizer or ed_imagesizer plugins, especially for a media heavy site.

    What i do in my templates is

    {image}
    {file_dir1}/_thumb/{filename}.{extension}
    {/image}

    Note that you can directly access thumbnails now by using

    {custom_file_field_name:image_manipulation_name}.

    Much cleaner..😉

    Hi Nelga,

    Can you give Mike’s suggestion a try? I think that is the best option and it’s the one I use as well.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

    Cheers,

    In the RTE I get the largest version of the image I choose from the filemanager when adding it to an entry. Is way larger than the RTE-field and therefor very unconvenient to handle. Is there anything I can do to have the RTE get a thumbnail instead of the original image?

    /David
    (I really didnt mean to hijack this thread. I thought my issue was related so I dared post here 😊)

    http://devot-ee.com/add-ons/image-sizer  I love it.

    I was looking for a solution to control imagesize in the RTE(Rich Text Editor) in the Control Panel. I guess you use image-sizer for the templates. Or did I miss something here?

    Yes, that plugin is just for the templates and for the original question in this thread.  RTE just came out so probably give it a little bit and you’ll likely see plugins come out.

    Hey David,

    I am sure a resize is in the works.

    Is there anything else I can help with?

    Cheers,

    Actually yes. 😊
    But in order not to derail Nelga‘s thread (more than I already have) I opened another one. And I have strong indications on that you already noticed that. 😊
