I have a site in development and I am using a subdomain to serve the assets. I am trying to use the ed_imageresizer tag but when I use the tag my images disappear. The developer has been in my FTP and EE CP with no success so far but I have a question:

Do I need to set up an htaccess on the subdomain or is there something I need to add to htaccess file in my root folder that redirects the assets to the subdomain? I know Jae Barclay has this method working quite well but I am not sure how he is resizing the images. I have emailed him but he has not responded.

Has anyone ever used the ED ImageResizer tag while serving assets from a subdomain or does anyone have a better way to resize the images without using an addon? I have Matrix installed as well. If anyone can throw some ideas at me I would be grateful.

    Hi MelPax,

Welcome to the forums. We’re glad to have you here. I’m sorry you are having this trouble with using a subdomain to server images. I would suggest talking to your host about seeing if you have any openbase_dir restrictions in effect between the subdomain and the main domain. Is so, ask them to remove the restrictions and you should be good to go.

If you still need htaccess help I would recommend stack overflow or I could move this thread to the community support forum.

I am using Engine Hosting. I will ask but they are partnered with EE so I can’t imagine that they have any restrictions, but I will ask.

If I can’t get this addon to work does anyone know a better way to resize without using an addon?

    Thanks for the response.

And to clarify, I am not having a problem seeing any images, I am having problems when I use the ed_imagesizer tag. If I don’t use the tag I can see my images. When I use the ed_imagesizer tag they disappear.

Like I said, the developer has been in my FTP and EE CP and apparently no one does this very often.

I just want to know if there is a work around. Is there a way to resize without using an addon.

    Hi MelPax,

Did you talk to your host about lifting openbase_dir restrictions on your subdomain? I haven’t used ED ImageSizer myself. My go to plugin is CE Image.

I spoke to Engine Hosting support and he acted like he didn’t know what I was talking about. I sent him your reply and he gave me no solution at all. I have tried 3 different AddOns. Paying for it was not the way I wanted to go but apparently that is the way to go.

I’ll give this one a whirl but if THIS one doesn’t work I am going to be forced into making 2 images for every entry and that is absurd.

I’ve been looking into getting ed_imageresizer to work with subdomain setups - finally got it working. I visited Erskine Designs gitub for the plugin and noticed they had added an absolute url path setting to the plugin paths:

    private $server_url = 'http://www.myseite.com'; // no trailing slash

To make sure, I just copied the whole script at github and made a new plugin file, then replaced the other one in third_party/ed_imageresizer/.

This seemed to sort it out as images don’t show up in the subdomain without this - but do in the ‘main site’. The plugin now also returns a bunch of errors if this field isnt set in the file.

FYI, even though you get conflicting instructions as to where is best to set the paths (in the system config file or in the plugin file) this seems to make no difference, as long as they are correct.

here’s a link to the raw file:
