Thinking of upgrading

We have a straight forward site running on 1.7.1, but some errors are beginning to creep in (Captcha will no longer work)

I was told in 2 months that the support for 1.7.1 will “dry up”

My big problem is that we are an online newspaper, so we can not afford downtime

I have been told that there are complications with running 2.4 (i.e. my code will not work)

    So ...

    1. Is this an issue?
    2. can we buy it, install it, but not make it the default system (ie keep running 1.7.1 ) until we can test the site

    Thank you

I know I will have more questions

Your 1x install shouldn’t have to have errors.  With captcha issues I’d check to ensure the folder permissions on the server didn’t get changed somehow.  I’m still running several 1x installs with captcha error-free.

That said, there’s no way to immediately say if your code will or will not work without closer investigation.  EE2 does do a find and replace operation while upgrading to change terminology in your templates from “weblog” to “channel” etc.  But if you’ve used 3rd party add-ons those won’t be covered.

Best bet is to grab a copy of the current site and go through the upgrade process locally or on a sub-directory on your server.
