    Greetings,

    Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but: I’m trying to get a better handle on what meta data is actually useful/recommended these days.

    I’ve had a variety of things in the meta data that I’ve just copied from one page to another, and now I wonder if these are really necessary. What’s the recommended usage these days?

    Thanks in advance for any thoughts! Here’s my basic set:

    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8">
    <meta name="resource-type" content="document">
    <meta name="distribution" content="local">
    <meta name="type" content="index">
    <meta name="description" content="[165 character description….]">
    <meta name="keywords" content="[maybe 5 keywords]">
    <meta name="copyright" content="copyright 1999-2012 [website]">
    <meta name="pubdate" content="20120131">

    I don’t think the keywords tag is used anymore, deffinetley not by google. I have read that the description tag will be used less as well but that is still a bit of an unknown. Other than that I only usually use the charset.

    Meta tags have there own meaning in code and are very useful to use.
