I am trying to find a way to be able to group certain members in email notifications.

So,

Instructors have a list of Students connected to them based on a member category field.

The member category field is a list of categories corresponding to a course.

The end goal is to have instructors have an easy way to email all the students enrolled in their course at the same time.

And they can send a message to all of those student emails…

Any thoughts?

Have you looked at the included Mailing List module?

You would create lists for each professor, and then add the Students’ email addresses to each professor’s list.

The professors could then use the Tools->Communicate utility to send the email to their students. The Communicate utility will also allow email to specific user groups.

Hey man this will almost work! The last element I’m needing is to be able to manually add students that are already in the system to the mailing list from a list of choices instead of manually typing in the email addresses to the list.

Is this possible?

Unfortunately that is not currently possible out of the box with ExpressionEngine. Is there anything else I can assist you with?
