Future PHP version requirements & Hosting Considerations

Hi, I’ve been considering setting up hosting with Rackspace on their Cloudsites package. Upon investigation I’ve found that they’re running PHP 5.2 (I’m told 5.2.6) which is way behind the current stable release.

From a forum at Rackspace it looks like current customers have been requesting a newer version of PHP for more than a year and Rackspace keeps moving the release date back. I was told in a support chat that it’s now Q2 of this year.

This has me a bit concerned with the recent announcement that EE 2.6.0 will require PHP 5.2.4.Reference: http://ellislab.com/blog/entry/expressionengine_2.4.0_released

This may be difficult to know, but are there plans that new versions of Expression Engine released in the next year would require a PHP version higher than 5.2.6?

Can any current Rackspace Cloudsites customers confirm the PHP version that is running on their account?, & are you satisfied with how EE performs on Cloudsites?

    Thanks,

    Anson

It’s not something that we can predict at this time, EyelightInc.  We try to give lots and lots of notice (~3 months on the post you linked) so that you have plenty of warning - and of course, you don’t have to upgrade on day 1 if your hosting environment isn’t ready.

Thanks for the response Lisa, I figured that would be the case but thought I’d try anyway 😊

Hopefully some Rackspace customers will share their experience.

    Cheers,

    Anson
